United Way Worldwide—CEO Summit—2011.

Overview:

United Way Worldwide is the leadership and support organization for a network of nearly 1,800 community-based United Ways in 45 countries and territories.

For over 125 years, United Way had been a fundraising organization, raising nearly $4 billion in the United States and $1.2 billion around the world to improve the lives of individuals and families.

Over the past several years, the top leadership decided the organization’s efforts should no longer just be focused solely on fundraising, but expanded to include being change agents in the communities they serve—to identify major needs in the community then bring together all stakeholders to fix the problems. This, of course, was a major paradigm shift that challenged regional leaders to figure how to best implement it throughout the organization.

To help with this transition, United Way asked us to support a 4-hour breakout session with 200 of their CEOs. The group discussed questions like: What new skill sets do the leaders need? How can leaders support their staff? What challenges have they had to address? Why do you feel stuck? What do you need to feel unstuck?

By identifying the key employee development needed, top leadership was able to better support their employees throughout a major culture change.

Results:

By helping top leadership identify key issues standing in their way, we help United Way achieve their goals of supporting the most critical projects in their areas, enhancing their leadership role in the community and redefining what success metrics looks like.
